Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi is the oldest higher education institution in Romania. Since 1860, the university has been carrying on a tradition of excellence and innovation in the fields of education and research, enjoying high prestige at national and international level.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is the first student-centered university in Romania in compliance with the Bologna Process: the full-scale use of the ECTS has been implemented for 11 years now, a 3-cycle study system is in place starting with the academic year 2005-2006, Diploma Supplements are issued in all degrees and several courses are taught in foreign languages.

Through its 15 faculties (Biology, Chemistry, Law, Economics and Business Administration, Sports, Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences, Physics, Geography and Geology, Computer Science, History, Letters, Mathematics, Psychology and Education Sciences, Orthodox Theology, Roman-Catholic Theology) our university provides its students with instruction at European standards.

Research at our university is top level. In 2008, for the third year in a row, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was placed first in the national research ranking compiled on the basis of Shanghai criteria. Our teachers are involved in over 400 national and international research projects, with the logistic support of 24 research centers.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is strongly committed to the same values and principles that govern the modern educational climate. Aiming to offer study and research programs at the highest levels of excellence and sustainability, the oldest University in Romania is open to new experiences and perspectives. Thus the international cooperation represents a major strategic objective.

At present, over 260 bilateral partnerships have been established with prestigious universities from all over the world, such as l’Université de Poitiers and USTL Lille – France, l’Université Catholique de Louvain – Belgium, Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg, Konstanz Universität, Friedrich-Schiller Universität Jena – Germany, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen – the Netherlands. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University also joined important international structures and is now a member of the Coimbra Group, the Utrecht Network and the Balkan University Network and affiliated, among others, to the European University Association, The International Association of Universities, l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the Network of Francophone Universities (RUFAC).

A university is not only a place of education and scientific research. Its service to the community is part of its definition – be it the local, regional, national, European or international community. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi sees itself as a proactive institution in each of these communities.
